The Real Asset Isn’t the Vehicle. It’s the Customer Relationship.

September 2026

For decades, automotive retail has been built around a simple objective: sell more vehicles.

Success has traditionally been measured by units sold, gross profit generated, and market share gained. Once the transaction was complete, the customer’s next purchase often sat years in the future.

But as consumer expectations evolve and competition for loyalty intensifies, Dealers and OEMs may want to consider a different question:

What if the most valuable asset in the dealership isn’t the vehicle at all? What if it’s the customer relationship?

Across industries, leading organizations have shifted their focus from individual transactions to customer lifetime value. Subscription services, software providers, retailers, and financial institutions increasingly evaluate success based on retention, engagement, and long-term customer relationships rather than one-time sales.

Automotive retail may be heading in the same direction.

A customer who purchases a vehicle today generates revenue from a single transaction. A customer who remains engaged with the dealership and brand over the next 10 to 15 years could generate multiple vehicle purchases, service revenue, F&I opportunities, referrals, and brand advocacy.

The difference between those two scenarios can be significant.

This shift from Transaction Economics to Relationship Economics has important implications for how Dealers and OEMs evaluate customer journeys.

Historically, automotive retail has excelled at facilitating vehicle ownership. The challenge moving forward may be creating regular opportunities to reconnect with customers after the sale. In an increasingly competitive market, loyalty is rarely built through a single transaction but through ongoing engagement.

That is where leasing becomes strategically significant.

Unlike traditional financing, leasing naturally creates recurring opportunities to reconnect with customers. Rather than waiting seven or eight years for the next purchase cycle, lease maturities establish predictable milestones that encourage conversations about changing needs, new technologies, vehicle upgrades, and future mobility options.

Viewed through this lens, leasing is not simply a financing alternative – it is a customer retention strategy.

Every lease maturity creates a natural opportunity to re-engage the customer, reassess their needs, showcase new products, and reinforce the value of the dealership and brand. These recurring touchpoints help transform what might otherwise be a one-time transaction into an ongoing relationship.

This distinction becomes increasingly important when comparing leasing and financing.

Both help customers acquire a vehicle. However, they support fundamentally different customer engagement models.

A traditional finance contract may result in years passing before a customer returns to discuss their next vehicle. Leasing, by contrast, creates a structured relationship loop. Defined maturities provide Dealers and OEMs with recurring opportunities to reconnect, introduce new technologies, discuss evolving needs, and maintain an active relationship throughout the ownership journey.

This does not mean leasing is the right solution for every customer. However, it does mean it deserves consideration in every customer conversation. Not only because it may align with a customer’s financial preferences, but because it creates opportunities to maintain engagement long after the initial sale.

As the automotive industry continues to evolve, the retailers and brands that thrive may not be those that simply sell the most vehicles. They may be those that create the most opportunities to stay connected to their customers.

In the end, Relationship Economics is not about how a vehicle is financed. It’s about creating a business model that turns a single transaction into an ongoing customer relationship. Leasing may be one of the most effective tools available to help Dealers and OEMs do exactly that.

Why Leasing Is Making a Comeback – and Why It Matters More Than Ever

June 2026

Picture a familiar moment on your showroom floor. A customer is excited, engaged, and ready to move forward. Then the monthly payment appears. The conversation stalls. In many cases, the deal quietly ends before it ever reaches the finish line.

This is becoming a common reality across our industry. With average new‑vehicle transaction prices now hovering above $63,000 and many finance payments pushing beyond $1,000 per month, it’s no longer interest or intent that has become the primary barrier to closing deals.  It’s affordability. And, at the same time, with overall vehicle sales expected to remain relatively flat at around 1.9 million units, there’s even greater pressure on Dealers to convert the traffic they already have.

This is where leasing is quietly re‑emerging as a powerful strategic lever.

A well‑structured lease can typically reduce monthly payments by 20-40%, often helping convert hesitant buyers into actual sales.  But it’s leasing’s impact that extends well beyond affordability that warrants strategic consideration.  Leasing gives customers access to newer vehicles more often, the most up to date vehicle technology, lower maintenance and repair costs and lower upfront costs, and predictable ownership.  Plus it eliminates the long‑term financial commitment (and in some cases stress) that many are wary to take on.

Plus, and just as importantly, leasing helps address another growing challenge in today’s market: negative equity. Longer loan terms and higher vehicle prices mean many customers are trading in vehicles before equity has fully recovered, rolling balances forward from deal to deal. Leasing introduces clearer ownership cycles and defined exit points, helping prevent negative equity from compounding over time and making future transactions harder to structure.

But the more important upside is what it does to the overall health of your business:

  • Faster inventory turns that reduce floorplan interest costs
  • More consisten service traffic while vehicles are still under warranty
  • A healthier supply of desirable low-mileage used vehicles

One multi‑line dealer group in Ontario’s GTA leaned into leasing after seeing consistent finance‑stage fallout. Within two quarters, he improved close rates, increased service lane activity, and gained better visibility into future deals through a growing lease portfolio.

Leasing doesn’t replace financing – it complements it.  In today’s market, which of late has been defined by high prices, tighter affordability, and slower overall growth, the dealers winning are not treating leasing as a niche option, but as a foundational tool.  Dealers who make leasing a natural, early part of their sales strategy and introduce it early in the customer journey conversation are better positioned to close more deals, protect margins, limit negative equity risk, and build a healthier, more resilient business.

10 Years of Driving the Future of Leasing

November 2025

For ten years, we’ve been redefining what leasing can be.

While much of the automotive industry has been stuck in neutral, SCI Lease Corp has spent the past decade shifting into high gear – modernizing, digitizing, and transforming the way leasing gets done.

This anniversary isn’t just a milestone. It’s proof of how far we’ve come – and how far we’re taking the industry next.

Digital By Design

From day one, we saw that the traditional way of leasing wasn’t built for the modern dealer or customer. Disconnected systems. Endless paperwork. Manual approvals. It was slow, clunky, and outdated.

So we changed it.

We reimagined the entire leasing process from the ground up – creating a fully digital, end-to-end experience that connects every part of the journey. From online retail to originations, servicing, and lease maturity, everything now happens seamlessly in one place.

No silos. No back-and-forth. Just one streamlined platform that delivers faster, simpler leasing for everyone involved.

Digital Deal Jacket: Our Turning Point

At the heart of this transformation is our Digital Deal Jacket – a breakthrough that lets dealers initiate, complete, and manage lease transactions entirely online.

Documents are created, signed, and stored digitally. Approvals move quickly. Funding is faster.  Customers stay informed and in control, wherever they are.

For dealers, it’s a major efficiency boost. For customers, it’s a smoother experience.
For us, it’s another example of how we’re bringing leasing into the 21st century.

Behind every great experience is powerful technology. That’s why we partnered with taq, whose platform powers every part of our digital leasing solution.

Together, we’ve built more than just software.  We’ve built a smarter, more connected way to lease. One that brings every phase of the process together on a single, modern platform designed for dealers, lenders, and customers alike.

A Decade of Progress. A Future of Possibility.

Ten years in, we’re not slowing down.

We’re proud of how far we’ve come – from paper-based processes to a fully digital ecosystem.

As we celebrate our 10th anniversary, we’re doubling down on innovation, partnership, and progress. Because we’re not waiting for the industry to catch up – we’re driving it forward.
